DOCTOR WHO TOP 10 - 12th Doctor
The penguin with his arse on fire.
10. The Swords of Kali
This story has everything a good Doctor Who comic needs - jumping between past and future, flashbacks featuring the fourth Doctor, a space goddess, vampires, lesbians... Everything.
9. Face the Raven
Sarah Dollard debuts with a bang. She paints such a vivid world in this one... I really wish she wrote more episodes than just Face the Raven and Thin Ice (which almost made the cut as well, another bloody good Capaldi episode). Please, Russell, ask her to come back.
8. Under the Lake / Before the Flood
The perfect Base Under Siege, with an excellent and likeable cast, a great monster (I love the Fisher King), and a fun involvement of time-travel. I can't help but love this one. My favourite Toby Whithouse script.
7. The Husbands of River Song
And my favourite Christmas special... I love River. I've always loved her. But this episode goes beyond that. The charm, the vibe... It's such a sweet and funny story.
6. Oxygen
Ah, my beloved "anti-capitalist zombie horror in space". It hits all the right beats and I'm just amazed how well Jamie Matthieson constructs the situations in his Doctor Who episodes, where he usually gets rid of the sonic screwdriver as well as the TARDIS. He does it so efficiently. He makes great Doctor Who horror seem effortless. Back in... Oh, I dunno. 2019? This was the first ever script I printed out and read in it's entirety. So it means a lot to me. An excellent episode for sure.
5. Best-laid Plans
Another Paul Spragg Memorial winner. This might just be my favourite one. In it the Doctor visits a shop that sells ideas to villains. An excellent premise and an excellent short story. Go listen to it, it's for free on the Big Finish website.
4. Four Doctors
Paul Cornell's take on The Day of the Doctor. This was a mini-series, published for the 10th anniversary of New Who by Titan. And it's just utterly excellent. I especially enjoy the dynamic where 10 and 12 hate each other and 11 is trying to be the mediator between the two of them, as he's able to get along with both his former and future self. The story offers glimpses at sins of alternate futures, as well as a sequel to one of my favourite 1st Doctor stories. Check it out if you haven't done so yet. It's brilliant.
3. Heaven Sent
I love Heaven Sent. It's beautiful and poignant and precise and well-thought out... Personally, there are two stories with the 12th Doctor I like more than this. Obviously, that's why it's at number 3. But I have to admit - this one deserves to top all the polls. It's really that good. Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Rachel Talalay all operating at 100% of their capacity. It's magnificent.
2. World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls
Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Rachel Talalay all operating at 100% of their capacity. It's magnificent. Again. But this time, it is also the end of an era. The most gorgeous, beautiful end of an era. Bleak and dark, yet hopeful and charming. Fanservicy, with a multi-Master story a Genesis of the Cybermen, yet never losing track of the real story. I really think it's the best New Who series finale. It felt like it was made for me.
1. Mummy on the Orient Express
And yet, out of all the episodes of this era, my love burns the brightest for this one. Jamie Mathieson made a simple murder mystery in space... And then he made it perfect. This is the episode where Peter Capaldi really becomes the Doctor. I've been thinking about the "sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones" speech for nearly a decade and it has helped me in some difficult times. It's precise, it's playful, it's dark... And above all, it's Doctor Who.

I reckon that the TARDIS’s sister made donna spill the coffee and the reason wild blue yonder is so wild is because it’s faction paradox crossover and the current Doctor will kiss Fitz hard on the lips
Unhinged rantings of a faction paradox adict.

You know how the Toymaker and the Doctor were doing best out of three? I think they still could have been if it was, like, the second best of three. Round 2 even
Round 1: Theta Sigma, One, Six
Round 2: Eight, Fourteen, Fifteen
Am I trying to shoehorn the EU in? Yes, yes I am.

Once Upon a Time Lord
For the record, I read this one in French and the translation was not it. However, I spent a really great time reading this in one go from start to finish.
The story is clever, but still pretty light, and really action packed. Martha doesn't get a lot to do unfortunately, but her presence and truthful characterisation works.
I had a hard time with the fact that there are LOTS of canon errors but honestly I can live with it, I'm mostly thankful that Dan Slott took the time to write a special release for the 60th of Doctor Who.
If you haven't read it yet, you should give it a try, it doesn't require any background and doesn't spoil anything that you wouldn't have watched or read yet!

Where can I find Beep the Meep?
Surely I’m not the only one looking at rumours that the Doctor Who 60th specials might include an appearance from a character so obscure that even I hadn’t heard of them, and wanting to have heard of them between now and November.
Does anyone have the resources to help me track down the Doctor Who Magazine stories featuring Beep the Meep? Specifically:
Doctor Who and the Star Beast
Party Animals
A Life of Matter and Death
TV Action!
Star Beast II (from a yearbook apparently, according to the TARDIS wiki)
Dearest Internet, Beloved Tumblr, please do share your resources if you have them. Not just for me, but for all of us. This need has only become greater since watching today’s trailer. Surely I am not alone.

🎉 Anniversary Week🎉
This anniversary week, let's delve a little deeper into the lifespan of a Gallifreyan.
How do Gallifreyans age?
Gallifreyans are known for their impressively long lives. A Gallifreyan leading a peaceful life free from the dangers of the Universe can enjoy on average around 4,000 to 7,000 years. However, they can potentially live up to 10,000 years in a single incarnation, so across thirteen incarnations, they could theoretically reach a staggering 130,000 years.
⏲️ Appearance Over Time
From spending half a century as teenagers to most of their lives appearing as mature adults, Gallifreyans age incredibly gracefully, thanks to their cellular regeneration. Their appearance at different stages of life varies, but they maintain an adult face for much of their lives. Post-regeneration, they can appear any age, with this appearance holding steady until around 800 years, when signs of ageing begin to show.
🧓 The Ageing Process
As Gallifreyans age, they experience a process akin to human ageing, but at a reduced rate:
cellular senescence (cells losing their ability to divide and function)
a decrease in hormone levels (impacting metabolism and immune functions)
telomere shortening (caps on the end of chromosomes that wear down over time with cell division)
However, these factors reset with each regeneration, though their effectiveness wanes with each new life. The result? Earlier incarnations tend to outlast the later ones, making the first few lives a bit like an extended youth.
So, as we celebrate this anniversary week, let's spare a thought for Gallifreyans trying to find enough space for all those birthday candles.

Seeing that new 60th teaser footage and the binary easter eggs within, it does really seem to me that the fact it's effectively a repeat of the events of the The Star Beast may actually be part of the plot of the anniversary, along with Tennant's return, rather than a Human Nature-style adaptation, especially since they're outright teasing the DWM issues?
Anyway, what I'm saying is that there's a non-zero chance of a Sharon Davies cameo (most likely as a flashback, maybe with 4 and K9 as well?).

DOCTOR WHO TOP 10 - 10th Doctor
David Tennant's first time being the Doctor. I can introduce the 10th Doctor like that now.
10. Love and Monsters
Yeah, we're starting with the controversial one. It's a love letter to fandom and the connections we build through it. It's also the third best story in series 2, so there's that. It's still kinda controversial and often described as a rubbish episode, even as the worst episode... but it shouldn't be. It's actually quite well written, with a lot of subtext about good fandom x toxic fandom woven througout. I appreciate Love and Monsters for that.
9. The Girl in the Fireplace
Emotional, beautiful, creative. I can't not love it.
8. The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit
An asteriod mysteriously hangs in front of a black hole... We've got a cozy Base Under Siege, possession, huge CGI devil, and the introduction of Ood. A properly terrifying story.
7. The Deep Hereafter
The pulpy, Eisner-esque style of this comic is amazing, but it's also here for the "stream of consciousness"-style ideas. Half-Nelson and Tiny Danza are stand-outs, but I also have a lot of love for Hecto Shellac. And the ending is amazing.
6. Utopia / The Sound of Drums / The Last of the Time Lords
My favourite finale of RTD1 era, possibly because I love Master so goddamn much.
5. The Time of Your Life
Genuinely beutiful goodbye to Donna. There's nothing really like it.
4. Turn Left
Filled with classic sci-fi ideas as well as some really creative stuff... I love the beetle. Towards the end of Russell's first era, he tries to take the show to some really dark places - some of those attempts really don't work for me, but Turn Left is the right way to do it.
3. Blink
Gorgeous puzzlebox of an episode. What else can I say? Everyone loves it, it's genuinely great.
2. The Crimson Hand
The final comic strip of 10th Doctor's DWM run, as well as the epic finale to Majenta's arc, this story is goddamn amazing. I love it to bits. It's huge and epic, yet really emotional. It hits all the right spots for me, one of the best Doctor Who comics ever.
1. Human Nature / The Family of Blood
What else? By many accounts, Human Nature is the best 7th Doctor novel. Well, they sure turned it into the best 10th Doctor TV story. I love it so much. I'm not really sure what else to say about it. It's incredible.
